Talc Free Body Powder Recipe Basics
The best ingredients for a good DIY body powder recipe include arrowroot powder, cornstarch, rice flour, fine clays (white, green, pink, etc.), and finely powdered herbs.
Among these ingredients you’ll find a lot of variety and room to customize your own talc free body powder. You can try them in different combinations and proportions, depending on your personal preferences and skin needs.
Below is a basic the basic DIY talc free body powder recipe to get you started and instructions on how to mix it and customize it.
Talc Free Body Powder Recipe
- ½ cup arrowroot or cornstarch or rice flour (or equal parts of all)
- ½ cup fine clay (kaolin, or French, or pink, or a combination of either)
- ¼ cup powdered herbs of choice (check possibilities further down)
- ½ small spoonful of uncooked rice (to prevent clumping)
- (opt.) ¼ tsp aromatic powders (cinnamon, or cocoa, or cardamom)
All of these powders are fine enough (in texture) that they feel comfortable on the skin. They’re also all very absorbing, so they’ll provide relief from excess moisture. This is the basic function of any homemade body powder.
However, the clays are also very healing for the skin. They help to actually treat rashes, they’re antimicrobial, and they help draw out toxins from the pores. (*) (*)
You can also add a small amount of aromatic powders, like cinnamon, cocoa, or even cardamom. These mainly help to boost the fragrance.
So depending on what your skin needs are, you can play around with the ingredients to achieve the best results.

Mixing the Ingredients
Basically, you want to mix the powders together and pass them through a fine mesh strainer.
If you’re using clays, try not to use a metal strainer, or metal tools, since the metal messes with the ion charge of the clays, which is a significant part of their healing property.
Add the uncooked rice and, using a funnel, put the whole mixture in a shaker-top bottle.
If you need to grind herbs into a fine powder, the best way is to use a clean coffee grinder.
- Fill the coffee grinder with your choice of herbs and choose the finest grind setting (if your grinder has settings).
- Grind for 20-30 seconds at a time, pausing for 10-15 seconds to allow the grinder and the herbs to cool down.
- Continue until you reach the desired powder particle size.
You can also grind the herbs by hand, using a mortar and pestle, but it will take a bit longer.
Recipe Variations (choose your herbs)
Like I mentioned before, you can choose to use all the powders in the basic talc free body powder recipe, or just some of them. And choosing to add clays will give the homemade body powder a antimicrobial, skin soothing boost.
But you can also further customize your DIY body powder by choosing to add different herbs to it. You can actually choose any herb you want for its medicinal properties. However, the most commonly used for DIY talc free body powders are the ones below.

Powdered Herbs or Essential Oils?
If you prefer to use essential oils, instead of powdered herbs, or as an addition to the herbs, you can of course. To mix in the essential oils you can also use the coffee grinder or a mortar and pestle.
To mix in a coffee grinder:
- Put 2 or 3 TB of your base powder into the grinder and add 10 drops of your choice of essential oils.
- Whizz together for about 15 seconds, pausing for 5, until the mixture looks uniform (no clumps).
- Transfer that powder into the rest of the powder mixture and blend together.
- Or transfer the whole thing directly into a shaker-top bottle using a funnel, put the lid on and shake vigorously for about a minute.
To use a mortar and pestle:
Put 2 or 3 TB of your base powder into the mortar (bowl) and add the essential oils bit by bit.
Using the pestle, grind the essential oil drops into the powder to break away all clumps.
Transfer to a shaker-top bottle, along with the rest of the base body powder, put the lid on and shake vigorously for about a minute.
As you can see, there’s not much complication in making your very own homemade body powder, but you do have a whole lot of room to customize the recipes and play around with the ingredients.
The best thing is that regardless of the number of ingredients you choose to add, you’ll still end up with a great talc free body powder you can safely use (and not worry about).
